Welcome to Hidalgo County,
Located in the deep southwest along the borders of Arizona and Mexico, Hidalgo County began as farming, ranching, and mining communities long before statehood in 1912. With a population of 4,894 and an area of 3,445.63 square miles., it averages 1.4 persons per square mile.
Hidalgo County was formed from Grant County in 1919, with the county seat in Lordsburg. It was named in honor of Miguel Dolores Hidalgo, who led the revolution in Mexico in 1810, which eventually led to its independence from Spain. The county “towns” are Virden, Lordsburg, Cotton City, Animas, and Rodeo.
Panoramic mountain horizons and spectacular views of the sky are only part of the county’s appeal. It boasts two ghost towns, a geothermal electricity generating plant, birdwatching, ranch tours, and hiking.

Public Meeting Concerning Commodore Road and
Big Hatchet Mountain Access
A meeting of Commodore Road stakeholders will be held Monday, December 8, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at the Hidalgo County Administrative building, 305 S Pyramid St., Lordsburg, New Mexico.
This will be an informal discussion on how we can all work together, at a County level, to resolve access issues to Crazy Cook Monument for the Continental Divide hikers, hunters, recreationalists, as well as the land owners along this road.
As most of you are aware, this road has been suffering maintenance challenges for several years. The torrential rains Hidalgo County received in September have only exasperated the erosion that was already occurring.
This meeting will be designed to find solutions that will meet all the stakeholder needs and concerns. Please come prepared to discuss some of your ideas.
Hope to see you there!!
