Hidalgo Medicial Services is a 22,000 sq. ft. facility that houses 6 dental exam rooms, 9 medical exam rooms, mental health service space, public health office space, and an expanded Family Support program. It provides comprehensive primary care services, a moderate complexity lab, x-ray dental services, mental health services, and family support. The staff is able to handle routine medical and dental care and a broad range of comprehensive community preventive, medical,and dental primary care services, as well as inpatient services including deliveries.

It operates seven facilities in Grant and Hidalgo County, focusing on medical, dental, and mental health and supporting family capacity to make wise choices. The facility at Animas serves the rural communities farther south.

HMS Mental Health

Dr. Neal A. Bowen, PhD

Neal_Bowen.jpgDr. Bowen earned BA degrees from Milan, Italy and the University of Texas in Psychology and Education Psychology and a doctorate in Counseling Psychology. He founded the Sunrise Center, a mental health clinic for refugees and immigrants in Austin, Texas. He left the faculty at Central Washington University to join HMS in 2005. He provides therapy in English, Spanish, and Italian and specializes in migration and acculturation issues, trama, and mood and personality disorders.

He conducts research about ethnic identity development and the impact on psychotherapeutic outcomes.

Darrick Nelson, MD

Dr.-Darrick-Nelsonsm.jpgFrom a small mining town in Arizona and a U. S. Army Veteran, Dr. Nelson and his family moved to Silver City from Corpus Christi, Texas. There, he was an assistant professor and core faculty member at Corpus Christi Family Practice Residency Program affiliated with Texas A&M University Health Science Center, Department of Family and Community Medicine.

Dr. Nelson obtained his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Texas at Dallas with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology.

Dr. Nelson has competed internationally on the U.S. Modern Pentathlon Team. He served in the U.S. Army for six years in Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

Assistant Medical Director

Dr. Michael Johnson, MD

Michael-Johnson-MD.jpgDr. Johnson is a board certified Family Practice physician. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology, his Master of Science degree in Biology, and a Doctorate of Medicine from from South Dakota State University. He completed his Family Practice Residency in Las Cruces. He has taught biology and chemistry to high school students in rural Kenya, worked as a laboratory technician, and served medical missions to Haiti and Venezuala. He has worked at HMS since August of 2002.

HMS Dental

Dr. William Rasband, DDS

William-Rasband-DDSsm.jpgA native New Mexican, Dr. Rasband grew up in Farmington, familiar with small and rural community needs. While in dental school in Kansas City, Missouri, he worked in remote and underserved locations. Earning his DDS from the University of Missouri in Kansas City and moving back to New Mexico occurred within a few months in 2009. 

He has volunteered his services  for  Give Kids a Smile and Students Take Action, performing free dental clinics, dental screenings, mentoring at risk children and raising money for children suffering with cancer to attend nearby camps. He worked with “Team Smile” in conjunction with the Kansas City Chiefs professional football team to provide an outreach dental program to children in underserved areas.

Dr. Rasband brings his experience and compassion to serve Hidalgo Medical Services and its patients.
